Grocery store funnies

As a newcomer to this part of the world, plenty of things catch my eye and hit my funny bone.

For instance:

Do you see what I see?

Close up: yep, that is Egg Nog. In. A. Can.

Signs are always a great opportunity for spelling and translation errors.

 "Apple Ping Lady"

I'll keep my eyes peeled and I'm sure I'll have more to share soon :)

Mango Mania

Did you know there are over 25 different kinds of mangoes?

I didn't, but thanks to our local grocery store, I now know there are at least 25 varieties of mangoes (and I learned that I still don't know how to peel/slice and of them without getting juice EVERYWHERE)

I tried to be adventurous and brought home some large, round, red mangoes and some small, green mangoes. Unfortunately, as a mango novice, I selected some pretty overripe mangoes and they weren't so great. Next time I'll know to ask for help!

Henna!

One of my husband's co-workers had us over recently and I discovered his wife is quite talented at doing henna. She offered to do it for me, and I couldn't pass it up! I've seen people use stencils to apply the designs, but mine pictured above was done completely free-hand! Super impressive if you ask me.

This is a favorite fashion and beauty choice in this region for decorating hands and feet. Women usually have this done around weddings or other special occasions. It comes in different colors ranging from a reddish brown to black. Some people (men and women) use the reddish henna dye in their hair - I've been told it helps hair grow and keeps it from falling out.

Lunch is served!

Two words can bring so much happiness to me around noon every week day: Shish Tawook.

A shish tawook is a sandwich. I think in the USA we might call it a "wrap." Grilled chicken, hummos, and chips (French fries to us American folk) all wrapped up in a thin pita bread and served fresh and warm.

At the restaurant I frequent is costs me about $0.80
If I'm feeling like an extra treat, I'll grab a fresh fruit smoothie called a "cocktail" and the total for the meal comes to $2.00. Fresh + filling + cheap = perfect
